That's a really interesting video. Thanks for linking to it -- I had never seen this kind of dance before. The gender differences she talks about are interesting as well.

Sophie did a very good job on Sabar. I didn't read a her thesis (it's in Dutch sorry) but her short movie is very good and shows that she knows very well what she talks about.
Sabar is an amazing dance, music and culture!

Sabar is awesome. After spending a couple weeks in Dakar, I came to the conclusion that the best dancers in the world live in Senegal.

If you want to learn more the drumming aspect, I highly recommend the book "Masters of the Sabar" by Patricia Tang.
